Description
This painting describes the pastime of Dhruva Maharaja who, upon being insulted by his stepmother left for the forest to find Lord Vishnu because he had heard that's where the great sages went to meditate, at the tender age of five. After practicing meditation and severe austerities for five months, Dhruva achieved full concentration on Lord Vishnu. Then the Lord Himself came to see him from His spiritual abode in Vaikuntha. Lord Vishnu has great beauty and is described in the Vedas and Vedic texts. The style is realism.
In this classical painting, Lord Visnu on the right, is wearing yellow garments and is standing on a floating lotus flower. Dhruva on the left, son of a king, only five years old, is wearing nothing but Brahmin underwear, a sign of renunciation, and is kneeling in front of his Lord.
The name Dhruva, means "immovable star", the north pole star.
