Haridas Thakur chanting the holy name
Artist
Dominique Amendola
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is a painting in oil on linen canvas. In this painting, The famous Haridas Thakur is chanting with deep relish the holy name of the Lord. He was considered a saint in his own time. He possessed a small hut and lived simply with no material possessions. He was rightly called the nama acharya, one who chants the names incessantly with deep concentration. He is the guru par excellence who can teach the glories of chanting the holy name in deep meditation. In the distance, you can see the domes of the Jagannath Puri temple. Haridas Thakur was a prominent Vaishnava convert from Islam. Since the people considered him a muslin, he never went inside the temple, thinking himself too lowborn to be admitted. At the time, no foreigners could enter the Jagannath Puri temple. This practice is still current to this day.
