This painting, oil on linen canvas, depicts a cafe scene in Paris. Les Deux Magots is one of the most famous cafes located in the quarters of Saint-Germain-Des-Pres. It once had a reputation as the rendezvous of the literary and intellectual life of the city. It is now a popular tourist destination.
There is a lot happening in this scene: 3 couples are prominent, as well as the waiter and a woman cutting a piece of cake with a fork. From left to right, there is an old guy reading the newspaper with a bored blond. A woman with glasses is cutting a piece of cake, also reading the paper. The waiter is taking another couple's order with a guy squinting and deciding what he wants to order. There is the couple on the right with the talkative guy in red, while his girlfriend is checking her phone. In the background various people are doing what we all do in a cafe, trying to enjoy a drink or something and soaking in the atmosphere. The inside of the cafe is quite dark by contrast, but here and there, the lights are on.
